TRIBUTE TO RUPERTO URQUIJO

Writer's picture: adminadmin

Ruperto Urquijo Maruri was a Basque musician who was born and also died in Laudio (1876-1970). He was the author of many Basque popular songs such as the “Zortziko”s. In his lyrics he always wrote about places around Laudio such as Santa Lucía, Gorbeia mountain and also about local saints such as San Roque, the patron saint of Laudio.

Around the year 1950 he founded “Los Arlotes”, a group of local male singers who were also friends. They used to sing their songs as they spent some time together walking around the town and having drinks in the different pubs, that was a custom. Ruperto was the one who wrote their lyrics.

Ruperto was born on the 27th of March and this year, the “Arlotes” together with the Laudio BHI school students decided to celebrate his birthday by singing some of his songs. They did it at the school playground first and then outside the school where Ruperto’s statue is.
