Here comes the summer, here comes Saint John

Saint John, or Donibane in Basque, is a feast celebrated in every village and town of the Basque Country on the evening of every 23rd of June. We gather useless things and paper and we burn a huge fire with the image of a man made of wool, strow and clothes on top of it. Children dance around the fire and people make promises or wishes because St John’s Eve is magical and there are several supersticious about it. While children run around and people get together, we drink chocolate waiting for the fire to come down so that young people who dare, jump over the ashes. We could say this magical eve represents a change, we leave everything negative aside with a very positive attitude and mood awaiting for wonderful things to come.
