Carnival starts before Ash Wednesday, exactly on Lardero Thursday and depending of the year it can be celebrated in February or March.
In carnival different traditions are carried out, which can be wearing costumes, groups singing couplets, doing parades and celebrating in the streets. In the past, carnivals were related to religion more than today. Carnivals began to be celebrated in the Middle Ages. In Laudio, when carnival starts we show the Leziaga witch around the streets and in the last day of carnival we burn it in the square. This year we haven´t done this because it’s considered to be a male chauvinist tradition. In the past it was like a menace to the liberty of women because witches were independent women and they wanted liberty. During the carnival, we usually eat carnival toasts which are delicious. This year, some of the students who are participating in the Erasmus+ project decided to prepare the toasts and share them at school. Here are some of the pictures we took that day.
Toasts ready to eat….. Toasts finished!!!!!!!!
Some of the Erasmus+ team students ready to eat our typical “carnival toasts”.
Our headmistress took part as well, she had the last toast.
